Hayward Recycling & Compost Programs

Tri-CED Community Recycling provides residential Hayward recycling collection services in partnership with WM, which manages landfill and compost collection. Together, we work to support Hayward’s commitment to reducing waste, conserving natural resources, and maintaining a clean, healthy, and beautiful community—now and for generations to come.

Collection Guidelines

To ensure efficient and clean service, please follow these set-out guidelines:

  • Set your carts at the curb by 6:00 AM on your collection day.
  • Leave at least 2 feet between each cart.
  • Face carts toward the street, with wheels against the curb.
  • Sort materials properly per state and local rules to avoid additional prohibited items fees.
  • Do not overload carts; lids must close completely.

Avoid Contamination Surcharges

Surcharges in Effect Since July 1, 2023

We’re here to help you recycle more and avoid extra charges. As of July 1, 2023, surcharges are applied when contaminated recycling or compost carts or overfilled trash carts are found. These charges help offset the costs of handling and disposing of contaminated materials.

What Is Cart Contamination?

A contaminated recycling or compost cart is one that contains items that don’t belong in that specific bin, leading to a failure to properly recycle or compost the materials. This can include things like loose plastic bags in the recycling, food scraps in the recycling, or non-compostable items in the compost bin.

For Single-Family Homes

After two warnings, the following surcharges apply per incident:

  • Contaminated Recycling or Compost Carts: $25.00
  • Overfilled Trash Carts: $10.00

Want to avoid surcharges? Make sure to sort your materials correctly and keep cart lids closed.
