Composting
Composting is nature’s way of recycling! By composting food scraps and other organic material, we are “Closing the Loop”, saving valuable landfill space and returning nutrients to the soil and food to our table.
Closing the Loop
- Farmers use compost to help grow new crops.
- We buy food at stores and farmers markets.
- Food is prepared for meal time.
- We place leftovers in a food scrap pail or other handy container.
- Food scraps go into the green yard waste cart.
- Green cart is emptied each week by Tri-CED.
- Food scraps and yard trimmings are processed.
- Nutrient-rich soil produced from food scraps and yard trimmings is part of the Union City annual Compost Giveaway!
Union City’s Annual Compost Giveway
To thank Union City residents for participating in the food scrap and yard waste program, Tri-CED Community Recycling, the City of Union City and Allied Waste Services sponsor an annual Compost Giveaway! Food scraps and yard trimmings taken from green carts are carefully composted to produce a dark, nutrient-rich soil amendment that plants and crops just love! So keep up the good work and look out for information on the annual Compost Giveway in your mail box.
