Battery Disposal

Union City and Hayward residents can now recycling common household batteries and old cell phones curbside.

Batteries are considered hazardous because of the metals and/or other toxic or corrosive materials contained within. For this reason, all batteries must be recycled, or taken to a household hazardous waste disposal facility, a universal waste handler, or an authorized recycling facility.  Used batteries have enough remaining voltage to cause a fire, leak or explosion if not handled properly. Never burn or dispose f batteries in the trash. Please call the Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste Program at (800) 606-6606 for more information on disposal of batteries and other household hazardous waste.

  • AAA, AA, C, D
  • 9-volt
  • Alkaline

  • Lithium and coin cells (IMPORTANT: Please tape ends to prevent short circuits)
